BARREL CACTUS (Ferocactus wislizeni) FRUIT TIME! And a @Fonztradamus SIGHTING! It’s always a treat to visit the southwest when these tart lil fruits are in season! Part of the current and historic foodways for a MYRIAD of tribal nations like the Yaqui and the Tohono O’Odham (who’s ancestral lands I’m visiting right now with he literal angels on the @Visit Tucson team!!), the flesh is tart and a lil slippy in that way that nopales are, too! The seeds are roasted and ground to flour (though the birds like em as is! 💚) I’m gonna try germinating a few seeds at home so I can have a little desert with me, aaaaaalllll the way in Ohio!
A lil seasonal throwback: poke sallet! IMPORTANT NOTE: while my family historically has cooked it for 15 mins in one thing of water, I now cook it for 7mins, change the water, and then cook it for another 5! Just to be super safe when feeding it to loved ones who maybe don’t have an iron tummy like me 😌
#ad this @e.l.f. Cosmetics Blackberry Sorbet Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balm reminded me that IT’S BLACKBERRY LEAF TEA TIME AGAIN #elfpartner #elfcosmetics #GlowReviverMeltingBalm
HOT MERMAIDWEED - YOUR NEW FAVE GREEN Nothing is wilder than being introduced to a plant that’s been around you your WHOLE LIFE, hiding in plain tiny sight! @Samuel Thayer taught me about this lil flavor powerhouse a few years ago, and now I love it so much I have it growing in my own yard!!
When in Tucson, do as @Fonztradamus does!! (There are several Prickly Pear, or Opuntia, cultivars bred over thousands of years to have fewer spines and glochids, and I was lucky enough to try one! Thanks, indigenous science! Also omg pls do not just bite a rando fresh nopal after watching this if it’s not one of these cultivars!! If u do I will point at THESE WORDS THAT YOU DID NOT REEEEEAAAAD!!)
